What makes you feel good about your community?
“What makes me foo good about my community of Lanai is that the people here are like family. We are all really tight and we call everyone uncle, aunt, grandma or grandpa. We know everyone and no ones a stranger to anyone. The adults look after ids that eren’t theirs and everyone is willing to help. Also here there is less crime. Not as many dangerous things happening here and its mostly quiet.”
What are you concerned about in your community?
“The thing that I am concerned about in my community is that the students in Lanai High and Elementary have the supplies they need to develop there education and knowledge. We don’t have as much teachers who have degrees yet and are mostly suitable teachers. And we can’t get as much teachers here because the cost for living here is very expensive. It is about 2X as expensive as Oahu or Maui. Also, this summer jobs – because of that instead students have nothing else to do than drink and smoke and do drugs. The drug problem here is very high.”
What do you hope to gain from the Focus Maui Nui Youth Alliance experience?
“The knowledge to help my school and community develop ways to fix the problem that are going on here and to use what I’ve learned in other school and community meetings.”
