Youth Alliance members gathered together with Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows
(a year-long program initiated by Decisions Maui & Focus Maui Nui designed to train community-identified outstanding individuals or employees to become future leaders) to visit and assist in the restoration of a place that reveals a simple lifestyle of sustainability and living off the land. The group of over 2 dozen was led into the scenic and peaceful valley by Puanani and Jonathan Lindsey of Maui Cultural Lands to their Project Malama Honokowai. Where no signs of modern civilization are present, an estimated 600 Hawaiian families once thrived, and ancient rock walls surrounding house sites and taro loi still stand. MCL is a grassroots organization made up of volunteers from all over the islands whose aim is to "stabilize, protect, and restore Hawaiian cultural resources." They officially began Project Malama Honokowai in 2000, when Ka'anapali Development Corp. agreed they could begin working on the land. Mrs. Lindsey explained the vision, the process, and the plans to restoring the valley, including a double hulled canoe to complete the Honokowai ahupua`a system.
