"Youth Alliance has given me the courage to speak up and say my opinion and it’s given me knowledge I can share."

2008-2009 Kickoff Session

Thirty two FOCUS MAUI NUI Youth Alliance members convened on a rainy Saturday morning to take their first steps in becoming leaders for change. The thirteen returnees and nineteen new members, sporting newly designed t-shirts, showed their versatility and tenacity as they kicked off the 4th year at ‘Maui’s Own Town Square’ Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, on November 22, 2008. Each month during the school year, high school participants from across Maui Nui gather to explore key components of our community. This behind-the-scene look is accompanied by projects and activities that give participants a greater understanding of how our community works. Guided by the Focus Maui Nui vision, values and key strategies for action, Youth Alliance members are empowered with the skills and experiences to truly become leaders for change. “Wellness & Community” is this year’s theme and Alliance members headed over to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center to meet Alyse Takayesu of the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui and MEDB. Members became involved with MEDB’s Maui Nui K-12 Sustainable Living Education Working Group that meets each semester to learn valuable ways to integrate renewable energy, green living and the environment into curriculum, campus infrastructure and operations.
