Youth Alliance members explore stars and space atop Haleakala
After the scenic trek to the top of the House of the Sun, members began the day with a Hawaiian oli chanted by Alliance member Kaulana Ryan. Once the tone of the day was established members set off to learn about University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy’s Magnum Telescope and Faulkes Telescope as well as the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS telescope). Members learned about the construction, cost and staffing of the telescopes as well as the optimal conditions for their operation. Surprise guest speaker Dr. Tamara Payne of The Boeing Company shared her personal journey with the members and provided insight into the education necessary to pursue a career in astronomy.
