Alliance members learn about the application of science in agriculture while visiting Monsanto
Surprise Guest Speaker for the day, Warren Watanabe, Executive Director of the Maui County Farm Bureau, shared the history and current state of agriculture in our islands and our schools. The dialogue generated many questions from the students on agriculture in the classroom and employment in the agriculture fields in Hawaii. Under the guidance of Paul Koehler, Manager of Scientific and Community Affairs Hawaii, and Research Associates Kai Thielk and Chris Roth, members were treated to a presentation on the operations and mission of Monsanto and engaged in hands-on activities designed to locate the DNA of a pea and the significance of plant pregnancy as it relates to genetic testing.
