The Youth Alliance harvests green waste and mediates
What happens to our solid waste? This was the guiding question that lead the Youth Alliance to the Central Maui Landfill, Maui EKO Compost & Maui Earth Compost. The Central Maui Landfill Manager, Mike Souza, provided a detailed description of the landfill and its capabilities. The members also learned about composting both with human sludge and without, offering them a comparison and opening their eyes to the possibilities and potential of harvesting green waste. It was a busy afternoon as the Alliance members broke into groups of four and practiced mediation techniques with Claudia Wahl of Maui Mediation Services. Although presented in a fun and lighthearted environment filled with laughs, the members were able to integrate into their vocabulary practical solutions to deescalating combative situations. Mediation is a vital skill as Alliance members, along with all the youth of Maui County, are our ambassadors to the future.
