"Youth Alliance has given me the courage to speak up and say my opinion and it’s given me knowledge I can share."

Just the facts! Youth Alliance takes on news reporting at The Maui News

Maui News reporter Ilima Loomis and staff turned Youth Alliance members into reporters for the day, giving them a hands-on look at a career in news reporting that culminated in writing their own news story. Loomis introduced members to the principles and practices of fair reporting, discussed the newspaper’s role in society and shared how she got her start in journalism to help prepare them for their assignment. Members interviewed Mayor Charmaine Tavares, University of Hawaii astronomer Mike Maberry and big wave surfer Archie Kalepa and put their new skills and writing talents to work to craft their own stories.
